Anglican Cathedral Stone Town Zanzibar

Christ Church is an Anglican cathedral in Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania. It belongs to the Anglican Church of Tanzania. It is a landmark historical church, as well as one of the most prominent examples of early Christian architecture in East Africa. It was built in seven years, the foundation stone being laid on Christmas Day 1873 until the opening on Christmas 1879.

Changu Island

‪Darajani Bazaar‬

The Darajani Market (or Bazaar) is the main bazaar in Stone Town, Zanzibar. The market is located in Darajani Road, in the surroundings of the Anglican Cathedral of Christ. The main structure of the market was built in 1904 by Bomanjee Maneckjee, for Sultan Ali bin Hamud. It was later extended and restored.

Dhow Countries Music Academy

The Dhow Countries Music Academy is the first and only music school in Zanzibar, Tanzania, located in Old Customs House in Stone Town. The academy promotes and preserves music heritage of the "Dhow Region" which include countries along the shores of the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf.The academy was established in 2002.

Fuerte Viejo de Zanzíbar ( Old Fort )

The Old Fort, also known as the Arab Fort and by other names, is a fortification located in Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar. It is the oldest building and a major visitor attraction of Stone Town. It was built by Omani Arabs after expelling the Portuguese in 1699. It was used as a garrison and prison in the 19th century, and as a terminal of the Zanzibar railways 1905-28.

Fukuchani Ruins & Cave

Fukuchani, aka the Fukuchani Ruins, is a National Monument with ruined houses which were restored by archaeologists and are now protected by a modern roof. They were erected in the 16th century by the Portuguese, most likely at the location of a Shirazi settlement.The abandoned settlement used a nearby cave as well for drinking water.

Hamamni Persian baths

The Baths were built between 1870 and 1888 for sultan Barghash bin Said for use as public baths, and maintained this function until 1920. They are referred to as "Persian" because their construction was commissioned to Shirazi architects. The word "Hamamni" means "the place of the baths".

House of Wonders

The House of Wonders or Palace of Wonders is a landmark building in Stone Town, Zanzibar. It is the largest and tallest building of Stone Town and occupies a prominent place facing the Forodhani Gardens on the old town's seafront in Mizingani Road. It is located between the Old Fort and the Palace Museum. The palace was built in 1883 for Barghash bin Said, second Sultan of Zanzibar.

Kizimkazi Old Mosque

Maruhubi Historical Sites

Maruhubi Palace was built in 1881 by extravagant Sultan Barghash as pleasure house for his harem, the Palace was surrounded by an extensive wall enclosure with a garden planted with a great variety of mango trees imported by Sultan Barghash from India.

Matemwe Beach

Matemwe Beach is part of the coast, in the north-east of Zanzibar. It is the longest beach in Zanzibar. The beach has soft sand and palm trees. Nungwi Mnarani Aquarium

As early as 1993, villagers in Nungwi (a village adjacent to Zanzibar) opened this turtle sanctuary in a large natural pond, and since then they have been trying to protect these beautiful prehistoric creatures from predation due to their meat or shell. At this interesting landmark, visitors will find turtles of various types, ages and sizes.

Old Dispensary

The Old Dispensary, also known as Ithnashiri Dispensary, is a historical building in Stone Town, Zanzibar. It is located on the seafront, in Mizingani Road, halfway between the Palace Museum and the harbour. It owes its name to the fact that it served as a dispensary in the first half of the 20th century.

Old Slave Market/Anglican Cathedral

The Anglican Cathedral of Christ Church was built in Stone Town (the old part of Zanzibar city) in the place where the biggest slave market of Eastern Africa operated. Its altar was placed exactly where the slaves for sale were whipped.The market was closed on the orders of the sultan in 1873, and in 1879 an Anglican cathedral was constructed at the site.

Peace Memorial Museum

The Beit Al Amaan (House of Peace also known as the Peace Memorial Museum) is located on Creek Road at the southern end of Stone Town in the area called Mnazi Mmoja. It was built in 1925 by the British architect J.H. Sinclair. It is a whitewashed building with a hexagonal plan, with arabesque windows, a large central dome, and 6 smaller domes at each point of the hexagon.

People's Palace Museum

Zanzibar Cannons

Zanzibar is an island off of the coast of Tanzania, East Africa. Zanzibar Stone Town Heritage Society (ZSTHS)

The Zanzibar Stone Town Heritage Society (ZSTHS) was created following Stone Town’s anointment as a World Heritage Site. Starting with less than 20 people, the non-government organization (NGO) was officially registered in June 2002. Since then, its membership has grown to over 200 members and the group has completed many restoration, conservation and awareness projects to preserve the heritage and culture of Stone Town.
